Last Chance to Buy Tickets to the 2008 Congressional Luncheon; Ticket Sales End Today

Georgia business leaders from more than 100 counties have reserved seats for the Georgia Chamber's Congressional Luncheon on Thursday, August 28, 2008, at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter, in Perry. The luncheon features U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson with a special introduction by U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss. A record attendance is expected.

The day begins with a "Meet & Greet Coca-Cola Reception," beginning at 11:00 a.m., followed by lunch at noon.

Education is Economics: GPEE Releases White Paper on the State’s Education and Workforce Development Initiatives

In August, the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education released a white paper that examines the status of our state’s education and workforce development initiatives. Produced in response to an inquiry from the leadership of the Georgia Chamber, the new report provides a succinct look at the actions taken and the progress made in recent years to improve Georgia’s public education system and increase the supply of high school graduates who are well-prepared to enter college or the workforce.

Congressional Luncheon Ticket Sales Brisk for Sen. Isakson

Tickets are selling fast for the 2008 Georgia Chamber of Commerce Congressional Luncheon, which will feature U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson. The event will be held in the Miller-Murphy-Howard Building at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter, in Perry, on August 28.

During his time in Congress, Isakson has been a strong supporter of small business. Isakson plans to brief the audience on federal legislation that affects business and local communities. Also on the program, delivering a special introduction, will be U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss.

2008 VoteForBusiness Bandwagon is Headed to Georgia

In 2006, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce engaged in its largest political efforts to date, investing millions in voter education and mobilization to focus on the issues that mattered most to the business community.

As part of that effort, the VoteForBusiness Bandwagon embarked on a 12-state tour to endorse business-friendly candidates, register voters, and pass out literature supporting business legislation.

The luncheon will be held in the Miller-Murphy-Howard Building at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry on Thursday, August 28, 2008. A reception sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company begins at 11:00 a.m., followed by lunch at noon.

Forbes Ranks Georgia No. 5 in Nation for Business

The state of Georgia jumped an impressive 10 spots to No. 5 in the nation in Forbes magazine's annual ranking of the best states for business.

"Virginia finished first for the third straight year," the magazine wrote July 31. "But Georgia is the real story, moving from 15th to fifth place. Georgia finished in the top 10 in four of the six categories we examined (economic climate, growth prospects, labor supply and regulatory environment). Just two other states, Virginia and third-ranked Washington, managed this feat."

Deadline looming to beat back anti-business ruling

Last week, we told you about the Atlanta judge whose abuse of power threatens to disrupt our state's energy supply, subject our businesses to unprecedented regulation and severely damage our already beleaguered economy.

Defying the U.S. Supreme Court itself, and adopting the poorly reasoned arguments of environmental extremists, Fulton County Superior Judge Thelma Wyatt Cummings Moore decided that carbon dioxide emissions should be regulated in Georgia -- ignoring the high court's ruling that only the EPA has the power to regulate CO2, and the EPA's own statements that doing so simply isn't feasible.

ESPN Names Valdosta One of 20 Finalists - Vote Now!

The City of Valdosta has been named one of the 20 finalists for ESPN's "TitleTown USA" honor, an ongoing contest featured on ESPN's flagship show, "SportsCenter," where sports fans throughout the nation submit nominations for what they consider to be "TitleTown USA."

Out of more than 3,000 applications, Valdosta has been chosen as a finalist to compete against major cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Boston and Detroit. Valdosta was selected for the city's unprecedented athletic achievements. In all, the city of Valdosta claims 439 championships of some type. The city, aptly nicknamed "Winnersville," is most notably known for football giants Valdosta High School, Lowndes High School and Valdosta State University.
